Yesterday, I attended a sweet ass training on hoarding and all of the levels. Evidently, there are four. And up to 10% of the population has Hoarding Disorder, a new diagnosis that the DSM 5 contains; but that’s an estimated statistic, the current one being 2 – 5%.
To find help, I can go to Clutterer’s Anonymous, but it seems they don’t care much for their name since hoarding isn’t an addiction. Also, I can join the online support group at http://www.childrenofhoarders.com, but it turns out they aren’t too keen on their name, either.
Want to know if you hoard? Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
- Do you go out and get an excessive amount of stuff?
- Do you have difficulty throwing things away?
- Are your living spaces, such as your bed, kitchen, toilet, shower, or couch no longer useful because of all the clutter?
- Are you or someone you know significantly distressed by this?
If you answered yes to at least the last three, chances are high you might be a hoarder.
